The Global Kitchen Runs for Congo Women!
Part of our mission is to partner with other nonprofits that support women’s empowerment around the world. The Global Kitchen formed a team to participate in the Run (and walk) for Congo Women in Portland for the second time this year. This event was started by Portland’s own Lisa Shannon to support women in the Congo. We raised enough in 2010 to sponsor two women for a year-long program through Women for Women International, and this year we raised enough to sponsor SIX women!!! Our ‘sisters’ from 2010 are Annonciate, who is 51 years old and has 5 children, and Rosette, 24 years old with 4 children. Both are widows who are struggling to survive and provide for their children. We will be writing about the 6 women we are sponsoring this year as we get information.
For women in the Congo, brutal gang rape and torture are a daily reality. The mission of Women for Women International is to help women survivors of war move from victim to survivor to active citizen. Through its programs it provides women survivors of war with direct financial assistance, job skills training, rights awareness education, trauma counseling and the opportunity to bond with other women who have endured similar violence and hardship.
Portland’s Run for Congo Women was held on July 23rd at Willamette Park. This year we doubled the size of the team, raised over $3,000 and sponsored 6 women!!
